A Long Island, New York teen died after suffering severe head injuries while playing football.

tom cutinellaTom Cutinella, a guard/linebacker for Shoreham-Wading River High School Wildcats, died Wednesday night after suffering head injuries when he collided with an opponent from John Glenn High School.

The sixteen-year-old junior was taken off the field after the 6:00 p.m. accident and rushed to Huntington Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.

He died a short time later.

Steven Cohen, the superintendent of the school district, released a statement saying in part: “Our school community is truly devastated by this awful news and we all extend our deepest condolences to Tom’s family and friends during this difficult time.”

Cohen also said that grief counseling will be provided for students and staff.
